- Education: B.E./B.Tech from a government-recognised university or institute. The accepted branch depends on the post.

- Signalling posts: Electrical, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunications, Applied Electronics, Industrial Electronics, Power Electronics or Instrumentation.
- Rolling Stock posts: Electrical, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Power Electronics or Instrumentation.
